The narrow streets, squares and old façades are easy to explore on foot; the museums and markets also offer opportunities to take a break between visits.

The Arènes d'Arles, a Roman amphitheatre still used for performances, are 650 m away. The Théâtre Antique, whose remains include the stage columns, is 800 m away. The Nécropole des Alyscamps, lined with sarcophagi along an ancient road, is 420 m away. The Parc des Ateliers hosts exhibitions and cultural spaces on a former industrial site. For longer journeys, Arles railway station is 1.2 km away; rail links make it easy to continue exploring the region.

A visit can combine ancient remains, the historic centre and museum collections, with a stop at a café or on a shady square. In spring and autumn, temperatures are often pleasant for walking through the streets and visiting outdoor sites. In summer, Arles hosts the Rencontres de la photographie and attracts more visitors, so it is best to plan visits for early in the day. Arles also makes it possible to spend a day in the Camargue, among marshland landscapes, birdwatching and the region’s villages.
