L'Estaque is a maritime district in northern Marseille, facing the bay and shaped by its history as a fishing village. Its houses climb the slopes above the port and former industrial sites. The district retains an identity distinct from the city centre: people come here to stroll along the coast, watch the boats and enjoy a more residential pace. Gardens and small beaches make pleasant stopping points between the district's streets and the seafront.

L'Estaque's ferry terminal connects the district with the bay, and the railway station makes it easy to travel to other parts of Marseille. Plage de la Lave and Plage du Fortin offer opportunities to enjoy the shore; Parc de Corbière also has walking areas and sea views. Marseille can be visited throughout the year. In spring and autumn, temperatures are often favourable for coastal walks and museum visits, while in summer it's best to plan outings by the sea for early in the day. You can start the day with a walk through the streets of L'Estaque, take a break on the coast, then finish around the Old Port. The mistral can make some days windy, even when the sun is shining; a light jacket is useful for outings near the water.
