The Palais des Papes, a vast 14th-century fortified palace, is 250 m away; its halls and courtyards tell the story of the time when Avignon was the seat of the papacy. Pont Saint-Bénézet, of which four arches remain above the Rhône, is also 250 m away. For views over the rooftops and river, the garden at Rocher des Doms has shady paths to the north of the palace. Avignon-Centre railway station is 850 m away, while the TGV station is outside the old town.

You can start the day with the monuments, continue through the streets of the centre and finish by the Rhône as the light fades over the ramparts. In July, the Festival d’Avignon brings performances to the city’s theatres and streets, and the city is busier. Spring and the shoulder season are well suited to exploring on foot in generally milder temperatures. For a trip beyond the ramparts, the villages and landscapes of Vaucluse are easier to explore by car.
