Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume is a Provençal town in the Var, between the inland landscapes and the Sainte-Baume massif. Its old town is centred around the basilica, which has attracted visitors and pilgrims for centuries. The area brings together religious heritage, villages and Mediterranean hills; it suits travellers who want to explore Provence by car and alternate cultural visits with walks in nature.

The Basilica of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine, with its Gothic architecture and crypt, is the town’s main attraction. The Sainte-Baume massif offers walking trails and woodland scenery; the Sainte-Baume cave is associated with the tradition of Mary Magdalene. The Caramy Gorges offer another setting for a walk in the region. To discover more of the local heritage, the Abbey of Saint-Hilaire and the surrounding villages are also worth visiting. Saint-Maximin bus station makes local journeys easier, while Toulon-Hyères and Marseille-Provence airports serve the region.

Spring and autumn are pleasant times to walk in the massif and visit the villages in milder temperatures. In summer, plan outdoor activities for the morning or late afternoon, when the Provençal heat eases. You could start the day with the basilica and the narrow streets of Saint-Maximin, then continue with a hike in the Sainte-Baume. With a car, you can also set aside another day to explore the landscapes and heritage sites scattered across the Var.
